What to see and do in Aoiz/Agoitz

Aoiz/Agoitz
Village
Aoiz/Agoitz, at 504 m altitude on the banks of the Irati river, in the pre-Pyrenean basin of Lumbier-Aoiz, was raised to the category of "Buena Villa" ("Good Town") in 1479 following the Peace of Aoiz, which ended decades of civil conflict between Navarrese factions; its coat of arms, with crossed swords, commemorates that pact. The Peña de Izaga, at 1,353 m, dominates the landscape.
Iglesia de San Miguel, Aoiz
Monument
A parish church of Romanesque origin with Renaissance and Baroque alterations. Notable features include a choir vault carved in the 16th century by the stonemason Juan de Osés, a 15th-century Hispano-Flemish baptismal font, and an altarpiece combining work by the Basque sculptor Juan de Ancheta with 18th-century Baroque additions.
Embalse de Itoiz
Nature
Next to Aoiz extends the Itoiz reservoir, a dam 125 m high and 600 m wide at the crest, whose reservoir stretches 35 km, built for irrigation despite strong social and environmental opposition during its construction.
Costrada de Aoiz
Food and drink
The costrada is Aoiz's typical sweet, a three-layer puff-pastry cake filled with pastry cream, whose golden, crunchy surface (costra, "crust") gives it its name. Born as a way of using up pig lard after the traditional pig slaughter, it was traditionally prepared for major family and religious celebrations; today it is only made by hand in Aoiz, which has its own gastronomic brotherhood dedicated to it.
Fiestas de Aoiz
Activity
Aoiz celebrates its main festival in mid-August, in addition to the feasts of San Isidro, on 15 May, and San Miguel, patron saint of the parish, on 29 September.
