Aoiz/Agoitz, at 504 m altitude on the banks of the Irati river, in the pre-Pyrenean basin of Lumbier-Aoiz, was raised to the category of "Buena Villa" ("Good Town") in 1479 following the Peace of Aoiz, which ended decades of civil conflict between Navarrese factions; its coat of arms, with crossed swords, commemorates that pact. The Peña de Izaga, at 1,353 m, dominates the landscape.
