What to see and do in Ochagavía/Otsagabia

Ochagavía/Otsagabia
Village
Ochagavía/Otsagabia, in the heart of the Salazar valley, was razed in 1794 by troops in the war against the French Convention: 182 houses, 52 mountain huts, and the hermitage of San Martín burned down. The village was rebuilt with tile roofs replacing the wooden ones, and today it preserves stone houses with very steep roofs that have earned it fame as one of the most charming villages in the Navarrese Pyrenees. It has 492 inhabitants (INE 2025).
Iglesia de San Juan Evangelista, Ochagavía
Monument
It preserves Renaissance altarpieces by the sculptor Miguel de Espinal (16th century) and a choir with carved armrests. Alongside it stand the medieval palaces of Urrutia, Iriarte, and Donamaría, and a 16th-century stone wayside cross.
Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Muskilda
Monument
A 12th-century Romanesque hermitage situated at the top of a hill at 1,025 m altitude above Ochagavía, surrounded by a walled enclosure. It is the reference sanctuary of the Salazar valley.
Fiestas de la Virgen de Muskilda
Activity
On 8 September, the feast of the Virgen de Muskilda, Ochagavía celebrates for five days traditional stick and handkerchief dances accompanied by "el Bobo" ("the Fool"), a double-faced masked character who leads the procession.
Selva de Irati
Nature
Ochagavía is, together with Orbaizeta, one of the main gateways to the Selva de Irati, a beech-and-fir forest of 17,179 hectares straddling Navarre and the French Béarn, the second-largest forest of this type in Europe after Germany's Black Forest. In 2017, UNESCO inscribed as World Heritage, within the transnational property "Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe," three specific reserves of the Selva de Irati: Lizardoia, Mendilatz (in Orbaizeta), and Tristuibartea, not the entire forest. Within it rises the Pico de Orhi, at 2,021 m.
