Cizur
Village
A municipality of the valley of Cizur, formed by eleven villages with its administrative capital in Gazólaz; it includes the settlement of Cizur Menor. It is a separate municipality from Zizur Mayor/Zizur Nagusia, which became independent from this same cendea in 1992.
Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel y el hospital de peregrinos de Cizur Menor
Historical milestone
In 1135 Lope Íñiguez and his wife Sancha Aznárez donated the church of San Miguel of Cizur Menor to the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, which established a convent there with a church and cloister and, in the early 13th century, a pilgrims' hospital that cared for those traveling the Camino Francés to Santiago. From the late 12th century it was the seat of the Hospitaller commandery of San Juan (Order of Malta) in the area. The church, in late Romanesque style, preserves a semicircular apse, a single nave and a battlemented tower.
Sierra del Perdón
Nature
A mountain range also called Erreniega, 1,039 meters high, about 10 km south of Pamplona, which extends over the territories of Cizur, Galar, Echarri, Belascoáin and Legarda. Since 1994 it has hosted a wind farm which by 2008 had some 40 turbines 40 meters high, the first in Navarre. The Camino de Santiago crosses it at its highest pass, at 770 meters, before descending toward Uterga and the Valdizarbe valley.
Monumento al Peregrino del Alto del Perdón
Monument
A sculptural ensemble made of iron sheet by Vicente Galbete, commissioned in 1996 by the wind-power company EHN together with the friends-of-the-Camino-de-Santiago association. It depicts a line of pilgrims from different eras, from medieval figures looking to the sky in search of direction to two present-day pilgrims with backpacks, sure of their path. It bears the inscription 'Donde se cruza el camino del viento con el de las estrellas' ('Where the path of the wind crosses that of the stars').
