Castle of l'Oluja Baixa Monument · les Oluges, Segarra, Lleida The castell de l'Oluja Baixa, a 16th-century castle-palace situated on the Plaça Major of les Oluges, preserves medieval structures beneath its Renaissance renovation and is divided into a defensive tower and a residential wing. The main doorway, a round arch with large voussoirs, bears the coat of arms of the sponsoring family; the tower, square and four storeys high, preserves the remains of an old machicolation. The settlement, documented since the 11th century (1072) as Oluja Jussana, was under the overlordship of the counts of Cerdanya, to whom Guerau Ponç swore an oath of fidelity. In the 14th-century hearth tax records (fogatges) it already appears divided into Oluja Sobirana and Oluja Jussana. It is a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). Photo: Deosringas (CC BY-SA 3.0 es) What to see and do in les Oluges
