What to see and do in Almaluez

Almaluez
Village
Almaluez is a municipality of the Campo de Gómara, in the province of Soria, which also groups together the settlements of Aguaviva de la Vega, Chércoles and Puebla de Eca, with 113 inhabitants. In Celtiberian times the settlement was located next to the nearby hill of Monóbar, where excavations brought to light Celtiberian walls, a dwelling with storage jars and a cremation necropolis with 322 tombs from the 4th and 3rd centuries BC, today divided between the Museo Arqueológico Nacional and the Museo Numantino. Around 1319 the lordship of Almaluez, a former hamlet of Medinaceli, passed to a citizen of Barcelona. Its 16th-century church of Santa María Magdalena has an octagonal chancel with a star-ribbed vault and a large 18th-century canopy of gilded wood.
The Church of Santa María Magdalena
Monument
A sixteenth-century Gothic-Renaissance church covered with star ribbed vaulting, the most substantial building of a municipality made up of four villages at the southern end of the Campo de Gómara.
The Baldachin with Solomonic Columns
Monument
Inside the parish church an eighteenth-century wooden baldachin is preserved with heavily ornamented Solomonic columns, a Baroque piece of quality in a village of a little over a hundred inhabitants.
The Lordship of Bernat Ricart
Historical milestone
Bernat Ricart acquired the lordship of the place in 1319, in a frontier zone between Castile and Aragon whose ownership changed hands repeatedly throughout the late Middle Ages.
The Cazadores de Soria Battalion
Historical milestone
At the beginning of the Peninsular War the first battalion of the Cazadores de Soria was formed here, with six hundred men; between 1811 and 1812 the village housed the Provincial Defence Junta.
The Crashed Heinkels
Historical milestone
During the Civil War (1936-1939) two Heinkel-112 fighters, the model used by the German air force in Spain, crashed in the vicinity of Almaluez, a minor episode that local memory has preserved to this day.
One Year for Ten
Curiosity
The saying "Almaluez, one year in ten" sums up the randomness of the harvests on dry land without water, where one good year had to make up for the nine that followed of drought or hail.
The Monteagudo Bird Area
Nature
The special protection area for birds of Monteagudo de las Vicarías covers 3,883 hectares of the municipal district, almost a quarter of the municipality, with steppe birdlife over cereal fields.
Four Villages by the Jalón
Curiosity
Almaluez, Aguaviva de la Vega, Chércoles and Puebla de Eca form a single town council of 113 inhabitants, against the 462 that the census of 1842 spread among the same four hamlets.
