Horcajo Medianero
Village
Horcajo Medianero is a municipality in the province of Salamanca, in the Tierra de Alba comarca. Besides Horcajo itself, its municipal area brings together the hamlets of Padiernos, Sanchopedro de Arriba, Sanchopedro de Abajo, Valdejimena and Valverde de Gonzaliáñez, the first two now deserted, over an area of 53.37 km². It owes its second name to the mediana, the historical border between León and Castilla, like its neighbours Chagarcía and Carpio Medianero; it was part of the kingdom of León as part of the alfoz of Alba de Tormes, and appears as Forcajo in 13th-century documentation. In the mid-19th century it had 525 inhabitants, more than double the roughly 200 it has today.
