What to see and do in Villamartín de Don Sancho

Villamartín de Don Sancho
Village
Villamartín de Don Sancho is a village in the comarca of Sahagún, in the province of León, of about 130 inhabitants, situated at 898 metres on the right bank of the río Cea. It preserves the remains of a fortified house and a church linked to the Tovar lineage, which in the modern era held possessions in the town with Sancho de Tovar. Its territory combines the irrigated vega with extensive dry farming and an important stand of Pyrenean oak at La Cota and the San Juan stream. It lies at the crossroads of regional roads between Almanza, Sahagún, Cea, Mansilla de las Mulas and El Burgo Ranero, and its patron saint is San Erasmo.
Remains of the fortified house of the Tovar family
Monument
The village preserves traces of a fortified house linked to the Tovar lineage, among them Sancho de Tovar, who exercised lordship over this town on the right bank of the river Cea in the modern centuries.
Church of el Dulce Nombre de María
Monument
A church dedicated to the village's patroness, who shares prominence with San Erasmo as patron; it presides over the single settlement of a municipality that in 1857 saw Villaselán and Villaverde de los Arcayos separated from it.
Rebollar of La Cota (oak wood)
Nature
La Cota is the most important Pyrenean oak woodland in the municipal district, crossed by the San Juan stream; its wooded mass contrasts with the irrigated meadowland of the Cea and with the extensive dry farmland occupying the rest of the municipality.
