What to see and do in Almanza

Almanza
Village
Almanza is a town of about 570 inhabitants situated at 917 meters above sea level, on both banks of the Cea river, in the east of the province of León. In the Middle Ages it was a walled town, with a fortress and moats, surrounded by a thick wall of lime and rubble masonry, of which a 13th-century stone ogival arch is preserved; the name Almanza means “lookout” in Arabic, referring to its location at a high, strategic point between the mountains and the plateau. The Roman road of El Pando passed through the town, linking Cantabria with the Duero valley and serving as a route for mountain people heading to the plateau in search of wine and wheat. It also preserves an 11th- and 12th-century Romanesque bridge and a castle protected since 1949.
Castle-palace of Almanza
Monument
15th-century fortress raised over a 12th-century one, framed with rubble masonry towers at its corners. It shapes the town's outline and has been declared a historic-artistic site since 22 April 1949.
Bridge of Almanza sobre el Cea
Monument
A work entirely of ashlar from the eleventh and twelfth centuries, with ten barrel vaults of between 8.40 and 11.35 metres span over piers with triangular cutwaters upstream. Its arches spend much of the year half-buried or submerged.
Gothic arch of the Almanza wall
Monument
A thirteenth-century stone gate that was one of the entrances to the walled enclosure and is today built into the urban fabric, preserving its original form intact. The historic centre is declared a medieval historic ensemble.
Cea riverside in Almanza
Nature
The town sits at 917 metres on small hills on both sides of the river Cea, at the point where the eastern mountains of León give way to the plateau, a contrast that explains its former strategic value.
Tower of Almanza y sus túneles
Monument
A twenty-eight-metre tower designed by the architect Torbado and built in 1947 with the collaboration of the whole village. Tradition holds that a tunnel runs down from it to the river and was used to fetch water during sieges.
Santa Marina de Aguas Santas
Activity
On 18 July the town celebrates Santa Marina, the second of its two great festivals along with San Antonio de Padua on 13 June, in a historic centre declared a medieval historic ensemble.
