What to see and do in Merindad de Montija

Merindad de Montija
Village
Merindad de Montija is a municipality of Burgos with 723 inhabitants and its capital at Villasante, one of the seven historic merindades of Castilla la Vieja, which in 1833 explicitly requested to be included in the province of Burgos for fear of being attached to Santander. It is made up of eighteen minor local entities and crossed by the N-629 road, which climbs towards Cantabria via the puerto de Los Tornos, and by the former La Robla railway, with a station at Bercedo. It preserves the 16th-century tower-palace of the Alvarado family in El Ribero, the Romanesque church of Bercedo and the Romanesque hermitage of Bárcena de Pienza, as well as the oak grove of Villasante. The lagoons of Gayangos and Bárcena form a single wetland of natural interest.
