What to see and do in La Puebla de Arganzón

La Puebla de Arganzón
Village
La Puebla de Arganzón is a town of around 565 inhabitants located in the Treviño enclave, a Burgos territory entirely surrounded by Álava, beside the río Zadorra, which forms a narrow passage between the montes Tuyo and Castillo Grande. It arose as a refoundation of the old settlement of Arganzón, already recorded in the year 871 and which disappeared in the mid-18th century, and received a settlement charter in 1191, amid the border struggles between Castile and Navarre. From the 14th century and throughout the early modern period it belonged to the extensive lordships of the House of Velasco, constables of Castile. Its old town has been a historic ensemble since 2007, and the castle of Arganzón watched over the passage of las Conchas four kilometres away.
Walls and gates of La Puebla de Arganzón
Monument
The village is still almost entirely inscribed within the medieval walled enclosure; of the four original gates the northern and southern ones survive, along with a circular turret at the northwest corner.
Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de La Puebla
Monument
The church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de La Puebla de Arganzón, in the Burgos stretch of the Ebro Valley, is a late Gothic temple built between the 14th and 15th centuries and renovated several times afterwards. It has a single nave divided into four bays with elegant ribbed vaults and several side chapels, among them the one housing the 16th-century Renaissance pantheon of the Gordejuela family. Also from the 16th century are the choir and the altarpiece, from the Castilian school of Gaspar de Tordesillas, built in 1535 in Plateresque style. The temple, late Gothic with a Baroque tower, has two entrances - one from the 15th century facing the square, and a more modern one next to the tower - and it has been protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) since 1991.

Curiosity
The church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, in late Gothic style, was built between the 14th and 15th centuries and was remodelled several times in the following centuries; it has a Baroque tower and two doorways, one facing the square, from the 15th century, and another, more modern one next to the tower. Its interior, a single nave divided into four bays with elegant ribbed vaults, houses several side chapels, one of them with the Renaissance funerary pantheon of the Gordejuela family. The most spectacular piece in the temple is its Renaissance high altarpiece, dated to around 1535 and attributed to the Castilian workshop of Gaspar de Tordesillas, with Plateresque motifs and imposing proportions, an unexpected ensemble in such a small town. The building has been protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) since 1991.
Declaration of La Puebla de Arganzón as a historic ensemble
Historical milestone
In 2007 the town was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in the category of historic ensemble for the coherence and integrity of its medieval layout, protected by a wall that is preserved in very good condition.
The Zadorra river as it passes through La Puebla de Arganzón
Nature
The Zadorra crosses the municipal district drawing a fertile meadow between the hills of the enclave; the river marks the natural limit of the walled town and has conditioned the layout of the town since the Middle Ages.
The medieval layout of La Puebla de Arganzón
Curiosity
Few towns preserve the medieval puebla model with such clarity: parallel streets linking the two gates, elongated blocks of narrow plots and the church presiding over the square at the centre of the enclosure.
