Villangómez
Village
Villangómez is a municipality in the Arlanza comarca, province of Burgos, with 229 inhabitants, which includes the settlement of Villafuertes. At La Mota, the knoll overlooking the village, remains of Roman-era terra sigillata have been found, owing to its proximity to the road that linked Clunia with Cantabria. The municipality's name derives from Villa de Don Gómez, its founder, as the townsfolk signed their names on a parchment of Burgos Cathedral in 1185. Together with the whole of the Campo de Muñó, it belonged to the merindad of Muñó, resettled after the founding of Burgos castle in the year 884, and in the 13th century the Catalan Brunet lineage bought estates in the town. It preserves the church of San Cosme and San Damián, with twenty historiated 13th-century corbels carved with human and animal heads.
