Santo Tomé de Zabarcos
Village
Santo Tomé de Zabarcos is a hamlet of Ávila province, with 70 inhabitants, in the comarca of La Moraña, watered by the Zapardiel and Arevalillo rivers, both of scant flow that even dry up in summer. The place is documented at the end of the 12th century as Azuvercas; according to the 13th-century census of the bishopric of Ávila, there existed a depopulated site, between the Arevalillo and the road to San Pedro del Arroyo, whose remains and vessels are now kept in the museum of Ávila, from which the population moved to its present site in 1183. The village is a good example of the building technique typical of La Moraña, mixing river cobble, adobe and brick, and its 16th-century church holds a polychrome baroque altarpiece.
