What to see and do in San Pedro del Arroyo

San Pedro del Arroyo
Village
San Pedro del Arroyo is a municipality in the comarca of La Moraña, in the province of Ávila, which includes the settlement of Morañuela and totals about 516 inhabitants, in a flat landscape at 935 metres above sea level watered by the Espinarejo and Arevalillo rivers. The whole municipal area lies within the special protection zone for birds of the Encinares de la Sierra de Ávila. Its origins go back to a Roman agrarian settlement of the 1st-2nd centuries which, already in the Late Empire, gave way to a monumental Roman villa that remained inhabited until the 5th century and is now being excavated under the name El Vergel. Its medieval church preserves a 15th-century Mudéjar coffered ceiling, fully polychromed, an almost unique case in the Meseta Norte.

Nature
The Roman villa of El Vergel is an archaeological site located in San Pedro del Arroyo, in the northernmost territory of ancient Lusitania, within the Conventus Emeritensis. The remains, scattered over an ellipse of some 40 hectares beside the Espinarejo river, have been known since 1905, when Fausto Rico reported to Manuel Gómez-Moreno the discovery of a building with mosaics and six burials. In 1930 the veterinarian Antonio Molinero Pérez, while investigating the nearby castro of la Mesa de Miranda, rediscovered the site and again recorded the mosaic beside the parish church. Built in the 3rd century and inhabited until the 5th, the villa preserves mosaic floors of great quality, among them one of Meleager, partly beneath the church itself and the cemetery; it was declared an archaeological zone in 2016.
