The Roman villa of El Vergel Nature · San Pedro del Arroyo, La Moraña, Ávila The Roman villa of El Vergel is an archaeological site located in San Pedro del Arroyo, in the northernmost territory of ancient Lusitania, within the Conventus Emeritensis. The remains, scattered over an ellipse of some 40 hectares beside the Espinarejo river, have been known since 1905, when Fausto Rico reported to Manuel Gómez-Moreno the discovery of a building with mosaics and six burials. In 1930 the veterinarian Antonio Molinero Pérez, while investigating the nearby castro of la Mesa de Miranda, rediscovered the site and again recorded the mosaic beside the parish church. Built in the 3rd century and inhabited until the 5th, the villa preserves mosaic floors of great quality, among them one of Meleager, partly beneath the church itself and the cemetery; it was declared an archaeological zone in 2016.
