What to see and do in San Miguel de Corneja

San Miguel de Corneja
Village
San Miguel de Corneja is a village in the province of Ávila, in the Corneja valley, on the northern slope of the sierra de Villafranca, within the comarca of El Barco de Ávila-Piedrahíta, 60 kilometres from the provincial capital. A communal custom of medieval origin keeps in public ownership, despite standing on private land, the centuries-old holm oaks and oaks among which livestock graze. Its economy relies on livestock farming and on small vegetable gardens where the famous beans of El Barco are grown. Besides the 18th-century church, it has an ethnographic museum built with items donated by the residents themselves, which on the ground floor recreates a typical house of the area and upstairs brings together tools of trades such as blacksmith, barber or shoemaker. It today has 65 inhabitants.
The parish church of San Miguel de Corneja
Monument
An 18th-century church set on a small hill at the foot of the sierra of Piedrahíta. It preserves in its surroundings the crosses of the old Way of the Cross that ordered the processions of a village that came to have 265 inhabitants.
The Vettone boar sculpture of San Miguel de Corneja
Monument
A pre-Roman zoomorphic sculpture attributed to the Vettones, found in the district and on public display since May 2021. It is the oldest piece of the heritage of a municipality of barely six square kilometres.
The two-faced conical sundial
Monument
A rare sundial of conical form and double face, with a T-shaped gnomon, is preserved in the village. Its geometry sets it apart from the flat dials usual in the rural architecture of the Corneja valley.
The communal oak and holm oak woods
Nature
The district preserves centuries-old oaks and holm oaks sustained by a regime of communal use inherited from the medieval comunidades de villa y tierra, a form of tenure still alive in the Corneja valley.
The ethnographic museum of rural life
Monument
The collection brings together farming implements, household utensils and craft trades and documents how life was lived in the Corneja valley up to 1970, the year the display itself takes as the boundary of the traditional rural world.
The population of San Miguel according to Madoz
Historical milestone
The dictionary counted seventy houses, including that of the town hall, in a village set on a small hill at the foot of the Sierra de Piedrahíta, with 265 inhabitants. The 2025 register records 65.
The chickweed of the Corneja
Food and drink
This herb, similar in flavour to watercress, is gathered between March and May in the streams of the municipal district and eaten in salad. It is a wild harvest that still forms part of the village's spring table.
The mantecados and perrunillas (shortbread pastries)
Food and drink
The valley's baking rests on two lard-based doughs: the mantecado, denser, and the perrunilla, which cracks as it bakes. They accompany beans and patatas revolconas at festival meals.
The judión (large bean) of El Barco
Food and drink
It is the largest of the seven varieties protected by the comarca's geographical indication and the one that demands the biggest pods; it is sown in the same terraced plots of the meadowland where the village has grown its white bean since ancient times.
