What to see and do in Becedillas

Becedillas
Village
Becedillas is a municipality of Ávila province in the judicial district of Piedrahíta, made up of the village itself and the settlement of Casillas de Chicapierna, on a territory of about 20 km². Its church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, with a single nave, preserves two altarpieces: the main one, Baroque, the work of the Salamancan Miguel Martínez de la Quintana between 1760 and 1762, and another from the 16th century, carved in 1545 by the sculptor Pedro de Salamanca, a follower of Berruguete, with images of Santa Lucía, la Asunción and Santa Bárbara, whose feast is celebrated with great liveliness in early December. The chapel of Santa Bárbara holds a wrought-iron pulpit. In the mid-19th century it had 383 residents, almost six times the number it has today: 70 inhabitants.
Main altarpiece of Our Lady of the Assumption
Monument
The Baroque altarpiece that closes the single nave of the church was carved between 1760 and 1762 by the Salamancan Miguel Martínez de la Quintana, the most artistically ambitious work of this village of the upper Corneja valley.
The altarpiece of Pedro de Salamanca
Monument
On the gospel wall of the parish church an altarpiece dated 1545 and attributed to Pedro de Salamanca is preserved, with the figures of Santa Lucía, an Assumption and Santa Bárbara, two centuries earlier than the high altarpiece.
Hermitage of Santa Bárbara
Monument
The hermitage dedicated to the patron saint of stonemasons stands out for its wrought iron pulpit, an uncommon piece in the rural hermitages of the comarca. To it are directed the acts of the festival the village holds in December.
The meadows of the upper Corneja
Nature
Nineteen square kilometres of holm oak woods, hay meadows and grassland at 1,063 metres of altitude, watered by a stream tributary of the Corneja. Extensive stock raising remains the dominant land use.
The district of Chicapierna
Curiosity
In the mid-nineteenth century the municipality's population was divided between the main settlement and the Chicapierna quarter, which together came to a hundred houses. Today the combined register is around seventy inhabitants.
The feast of Santa Bárbara
Activity
In early December the village celebrates the feast of Santa Bárbara, patroness of the hermitage of the same name, with particular enthusiasm, in the one date on the calendar capable of bringing back the residents who emigrated.
Becedillas in Madoz's dictionary
Historical milestone
The work, published between 1845 and 1850, recorded a hundred houses counting those of the Chicapierna quarter and 383 inhabitants, with an economy of cereal, flax and pulses supplemented with livestock and small game in the holm oak woods of the municipality.
