What to see and do in Peguerinos

Peguerinos
Village
Peguerinos is a municipality in the province of Ávila, on the border with Segovia and the Community of Madrid, situated at 1351 metres of altitude next to the La Aceña reservoir and on the south-western edge of the Sierra de Guadarrama Norte natural park. It has around 283 inhabitants. It was founded or resettled during the Reconquista by the Comunidad de Ciudad y Tierra de Segovia, which granted it a founding charter in 1297, the first ever granted by a city without royal consent; it belonged to the province of Segovia until the 1833 division, when it passed to Ávila, although it remains represented within the Segovian Comunidad de Ciudad y Tierra. During the Civil War it was a strategic enclave controlled alternately by both sides, and the village still preserves trenches and bunkers from those battles.
The La Aceña reservoir
Nature
The La Aceña reservoir lies at the edge of the municipal district of Peguerinos (Ávila), already on the border of the Sierra de Guadarrama natural park, which extends into the southwest of the municipality, and is an area for walking and observing forest birds. It belongs to the Tajo river basin and dams the waters of the Aceña river by means of an arch-gravity dam, designed by J. L. Nistal and built in 1991; it has a surface area of 115 hectares and a capacity of 24 cubic hectometres. At the foot of the dam stands the La Aceña ETAP, which treats its waters to supply the surrounding villages, and can also transfer water by tunnel to the La Jarosa reservoir.
The trenches and the shelter of Cueva Valiente
Curiosity
The municipality was a strategic enclave in the Civil War facing the advance on Madrid and preserves trenches, bunkers and the Cueva Valiente shelter, as well as the ruins of the abandoned settlement of La Lastra, destroyed in the fighting.
The separation of Peguerinos from El Espinar
Historical milestone
The place, resettled around 1297 by the community of Segovia, was constituted as a municipality of its own on separating from El Espinar. The provincial reorganisation of 1833 moved it from Segovia to Ávila, although it keeps links with the Segovian community.
