What to see and do in Espinoso del Rey

Espinoso del Rey
Village
Espinoso del Rey is a municipality in the comarca of La Jara, in the province of Toledo, with 420 inhabitants (INE 2025). Its name comes from the Latin espinosus, after the thorn bushes that surrounded the place in its origins, and the qualifier "del Rey" was added in the 16th century, when Philip II declared it an exempt or royal town in 1579, completing a long process of emancipation within the lands of Talavera. Tradition places its founding in the early 4th century by Christians fleeing Carpetania. It preserves the pillory of justice and the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, on a hill on the outskirts, patroness of the town; its church of Santiago el Mayor, with a Latin-cross plan and three naves, was remodelled in the mid-16th century and repaired after damage in the Civil War.
Church of Santiago el Mayor de Espinoso del Rey
Monument
The church of Santiago el Mayor in Espinoso del Rey, in the comarca of La Jara (Toledo), has a Latin-cross floor plan with three naves, the central one wider and taller than the side ones, in a style that mixes several classical models. It was remodelled in the mid-16th century, the date to which its current appearance corresponds; an older temple had previously stood on the same site, of which construction remains have been found. During the Civil War it suffered damage to altars and 17th-century images, which were later repaired.
Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios de Espinoso
Monument
The hermitage of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios stands on a small hill on the outskirts of Espinoso del Rey, in the Toledo Jara, and is dedicated to the town's patron saint. A 19th-century description places it about 400 varas from the village, close to 330 metres, at the top of the hill.
Espinoso del Rey, a Town since 1579
Curiosity
Espinoso del Rey (La Jara, Toledo) belonged to the jurisdiction of Talavera de la Reina from the reign of Ferdinand III, who granted that town all the land between Toledo and Trujillo. The town did not achieve independence until 14 August 1579, the date on which it obtained the title of villa; after emancipation it came to be governed by the Santa Hermandad Vieja de Talavera.
