What to see and do in Uceda

Uceda
Village
Municipality of the comarca of La Campiña, in the province of Guadalajara, set at 779 metres above sea level in the upper campiña and crossed by the rivers Jarama and Lozoya between low hills of gall oak and holm oak; it received a fuero of its own in 1222 and passed afterwards to the archiepiscopal lordship of Toledo, and it preserves the Romanesque church of Santa María de la Varga, of the thirteenth century and declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1991, alongside the parish church of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries dedicated to the town's patroness.
Church of Santa María de la Varga
Monument
The church of Santa María de la Varga, today in ruins within the cemetery of Uceda (Guadalajara), was built in the first half of the 13th century with a Romanesque layout and some features in the arches that are already Gothic. It has three naves ending in semicircular apses, the central one larger and reinforced with engaged columns, lit by three double-arched openings; it was built in limestone ashlar brought from a quarry near the monastery of Bonaval, in Retiendas. Its south doorway shows six archivolts on paired colonnettes, and in the 18th century the south apse was refurbished with Baroque plasterwork. An archaeological study has catalogued 180 masons' marks on the building. It was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) on 8 October 1991.
Parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Varga
Monument
The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Varga, dedicated to the patron saint of Uceda, in the La Campiña district (Guadalajara), was built between the 16th and 17th centuries. The temple was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) on 8 October 1991, a recognition that confirms its value as the town's main religious landmark.
Walls of Uceda
Monument
Remains of the medieval walled enclosure raised after the reconquest of 1085.
The Jarama and Lozoya rivers in Uceda
Nature
The municipal district, at 779 metres in the high campiña, is crossed by the rivers Jarama and Lozoya, among low hills covered with gall oaks and holm oaks.
The 1222 charter of Uceda
Curiosity
The charter of Uceda was granted by Ferdinand III of Castile on 22 July 1222 in Peñafiel, a brief charter granted after the definitive reconquest of the town in 1085 by Alfonso VI, who made it a royal domain. In April 1252, Ferdinand III himself handed the council of Uceda over to his son Sancho, future Archbishop of Toledo, in exchange for Baza, and from then on the town remained under the lordship of the Archbishopric of Toledo.
Grass pea porridge
Food and drink
Grass pea flour toasted and cooked with water, garlic, paprika and torreznos until it forms a thick paste that is eaten straight from the pan with a wooden spoon. It was the winter food of the shepherds and farmers of the northern moorlands.
