What to see and do in Espinosa de Henares

Espinosa de Henares
Village
Espinosa de Henares, in La Campiña (Guadalajara), has 715 inhabitants (2025) spread between the main settlement and the hamlets of Carrascosa de Henares and the now uninhabited Valdeancheta, over 39.42 km² and an average altitude of 761 m. It sits in the transition between the undulations of La Alcarria and the plains of La Campiña, with the village on the left bank of the Henares sheltered by the Tendedero hill; its most significant elevation is Monte Tejer, a historic forest and pasture reserve. Through this valley, where the Henares receives the river Aliendre, the Roman road Iter XXV ran since antiquity, between Mérida and Zaragoza. It preserves a convent of Santa Clara founded in 1899 and inhabited by Franciscan nuns.
Medieval bridge of Espinosa de Henares
Monument
A five-arch stone bridge over the río Henares, rebuilt in 1921. It is a very old structure, of medieval design and dated to around the second half of the 15th century, although an earlier Roman origin is not ruled out. The arch closest to the village served as a channel for a mill; today only one arch lets the water through, while the furthest one feeds the turbine of a flour mill upstream. Two or three kilometres downstream, the foundations and piers of an even older bridge are preserved.
Church of la Asunción de Espinosa de Henares
Monument
A 13th-century church that preserves coffered ceilings in the Mudéjar tradition.
Convent of Santa Clara de Espinosa de Henares
Monument
The convent of Santa Clara de Espinosa de Henares, in the comarca of La Campiña (Guadalajara), was founded on 23 August 1899 by a married couple from Medinaceli for Franciscan Poor Clare nuns of enclosed, contemplative life, with sister Vicenta de San José as first abbess. On 24 July 1936 it was seized during the Civil War and suffered bombing damage, later being rebuilt by Regiones Devastadas. After the Second Vatican Council the community closed its school to focus on contemplative life, and since 2013 the building has housed a new religious community, the Servidores del Evangelio de la Misericordia de Dios.
Monte Tejer
Nature
Monte Tejer is the most prominent rise in the municipality of Espinosa de Henares, in the comarca of La Campiña (Guadalajara), and has been mentioned since ancient times in the municipality's documents. It lies near the deserted hamlet of Fonciana and marks the visual boundary of the vega. It historically served as the area's main forest and pasture reserve, and its economic value was reflected in medieval inheritances and property transfers, where the hill appeared as the most valuable asset, even above Espinosa itself, then described as a simple house or hamlet.
Between the Alcarria and the Campiña
Curiosity
The municipality lies in the transition zone between the rolling ground of La Alcarria and the plains of La Campiña, with the built-up area on the left bank of the Henares, sheltered by the Cerro del Tendedero.
