Salinas del Manzano
Village
Salinas del Manzano is a municipality in the comarca of Serranía Media-Campichuelo y Serranía Baja, in the province of Cuenca, with 86 inhabitants (INE 2025), situated at 1,132 metres above sea level beside the río Henarrubia. Its name refers to the inland salt works known as El Salero, whose exploitation is already documented in the year 181 BC and whose first documentary record, from the 12th century, dates to 1187, when Alfonso VIII of Castile granted its tithes to the canons of Cuenca cathedral. In the 10th century the Muslims built the fortress of las Malenas on a watchtower riddled with caves, on the defensive line between the taifas of Albarracín and Alpuente. The municipality preserves the 16th-century church of la Natividad, and the hermitage of San Roque, the patron saint to whom the festival of 16 August is dedicated.
