Alconchel de la Estrella
Village
Alconchel de la Estrella is a municipality in the La Mancha Conquense district, in the province of Cuenca, situated at 833 metres above sea level and 82 km from the provincial capital; it has 75 inhabitants (INE 2025), compared with 532 in the mid-19th century. Documented since 1194, when Alfonso VIII granted the Order of Santiago half of its tolls, it was called simply Alconchel until the 1916 reform. It is crowned by the ruins of a 14th-century castle built on the conical hill that overlooks the hamlet. At its foot stands the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Estrella, from the 13th century, and on a nearby hill, at 874 metres, the chapel of Nuestra Señora de la Cuesta, patron saint of the town, to which pilgrims climb on 7 and 8 May, a festivity shared with Las Pedroñeras.
