What to see and do in Abenójar

Abenójar
Village
Municipality of the comarca of Valle de Alcudia, in the province of Ciudad Real, set at 612 metres in the depression of the river Tirteafuera, between the Montes de Toledo and the Valle de Alcudia; that river gave its name to Doctor Pedro Recio de Tirteafuera, the physician who in Don Quixote stops Sancho Panza from eating. In the district is the volcanic lagoon of Michos, a maar declared a Natural Monument in 1999, and in the built-up area the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and the grain silo of the National Silo Network stand out.

Monument
The church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is the parish church of Abenójar, in the comarca of Valle de Alcudia, province of Ciudad Real, and the main religious building in the town's historic centre. It was built in 1826, and its fabric is described in the volume on Abenójar of Pascual Madoz's Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico de España.

Monument
A grain silo that stands out in the village landscape, an example of the agricultural architecture of the 20th-century National Silo Network.
Volcanic Lagoon of Michos
Nature
This volcanic maar in Abenójar, in the Valle de Alcudia, is one of the most representative manifestations of the volcanism of the Campo de Calatrava and was declared a Natural Monument by Decree 209/1999, of 5 October, following a process opened in December 1998. It is also part of the site of community importance of the rivers of the middle basin of the Guadiana and their slopes. It covers 215 hectares of privately owned land, with an explosion crater that holds within it a semi-permanent lagoon, located at the foot of a quartzite mountain range in an area of high scenic value, on the boundary with flat land.
Cave of los Muñecos
Nature
A cave in the municipal district, one of the singular geographical features of the area around Abenójar.
Valley of the Tirteafuera River
Nature
The valley of the río Tirteafuera is the depression formed by this tributary of the Guadiana as it crosses the west of the Campo de Calatrava, between the Montes de Toledo and the Valle de Alcudia, in Ciudad Real. The river, whose Arabic name was distorted by popular etymology, rises in the sierra de Calatrava and runs parallel to the Guadiana until near Abenójar, where it turns north forming numerous meanders before flowing into its left bank. It was declared a Site of Community Importance; its flow, scant, tends to dry up in periods of drought owing to agricultural overexploitation. The village of Abenójar sits at 612 metres above sea level in this depression, and the river is mentioned in Don Quixote, which places in Tirteafuera the doctor Pedro Recio y Agüero.
A Cervantine place name
Curiosity
The River Tirteafuera that crosses the municipal district gives his name to Doctor Pedro Recio de Tirteafuera, the physician who in Don Quixote stops Sancho Panza from eating during his governorship of the island of Barataria.
