What to see and do in Luciana

Luciana
Village
Municipality of the comarca of Montes de Ciudad Real, in the province of Ciudad Real, set beside the point where the river Bullaque delivers its waters to the Guadiana and spanned by a bridge of thirteen arches built at the end of the eighteenth century. Its district culminates in the 922 metres of the Canalizos range, covered in Mediterranean scrub, and it preserves the parish church of Santa María Egipcíaca and the chapel of Nuestra Señora del Rosario, its patroness; in 1835 Carlist bands stormed the village and burnt forty of its houses.
Church of Santa María Egipcíaca
Monument
Parish church of Luciana, of simple design and deeply rooted in local tradition, dedicated to Santa María Egipcíaca, whose feast day is celebrated on 2 April. According to Pascual Madoz's Diccionario geográfico (1847), the parish then appeared as an annex of that of Abenójar, the town on which it administratively depended.
Bridge over the Bullaque River
Monument
A bridge of thirteen arches built at the end of the 18th century over the River Bullaque, close to Luciana. It is one of the most notable works of historic engineering in the comarca.
Confluence of the Guadiana and the Bullaque
Nature
Luciana sits beside the point where the River Bullaque delivers its waters to the Guadiana. The tracks along both watercourses make it possible to walk through well-preserved riverside groves and woodland.
Hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Luciana
Monument
A hermitage dedicated to the patron saint of Luciana and the focus of its September patron saint festival. The municipality also keeps the hermitage of San Isidro, patron saint of farm workers.
Mountain range of los Canalizos
Nature
A range that reaches 922 metres in the municipal district of Luciana, the municipality's greatest height along with the Sierra de Valpérez. Its slopes are covered with Mediterranean woodland.
Festivities of la Virgen del Rosario de Luciana
Activity
The patron saint festival of Luciana in honour of the Virgen del Rosario, famous for its dances and bullfighting events.
Luciana in the Carlist Wars
Curiosity
In 1835 Carlist bands stormed Luciana and burned a good part of the town: records of the time speak of thirty-four houses left standing and forty burned.
