Valley of the Tirteafuera River Nature · Abenójar, Valle de Alcudia, Ciudad Real The valley of the río Tirteafuera is the depression formed by this tributary of the Guadiana as it crosses the west of the Campo de Calatrava, between the Montes de Toledo and the Valle de Alcudia, in Ciudad Real. The river, whose Arabic name was distorted by popular etymology, rises in the sierra de Calatrava and runs parallel to the Guadiana until near Abenójar, where it turns north forming numerous meanders before flowing into its left bank. It was declared a Site of Community Importance; its flow, scant, tends to dry up in periods of drought owing to agricultural overexploitation. The village of Abenójar sits at 612 metres above sea level in this depression, and the river is mentioned in Don Quixote, which places in Tirteafuera the doctor Pedro Recio y Agüero.
