What to see and do in Horcajo de los Montes

Horcajo de los Montes
Village
Municipality of the comarca of Montes de Ciudad Real, in the province of Ciudad Real, at the gates of Cabañeros National Park, whose visitor centre it houses and from which some of the park's most representative footpaths are reached; in its district falls the Chorrera de Horcajo, a waterfall of some twelve metres included among the protected landscapes of Castilla-La Mancha. It preserves the church of San Antonio Abad, of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries with Gothic elements and Mudéjar details on the doorway, and an ethnographic museum with a nineteenth-century wine press.
Church of San Antonio Abad de Horcajo
Monument
A 14th- and 15th-century church with Gothic elements and Mudéjar details in its portal, and the principal monument of Horcajo de los Montes. It has a single nave, with a gabled roof over slightly pointed arches, and a four-sided wooden ceiling in the apse, with beams resting on decorated corbels. Several chapels are attached to the walls, one of them containing the baptismal font, and semicircular buttresses can be seen on the exterior. The most valuable feature is the portal, of Arab lineage, with a multi-lobed arch inscribed within an alfiz below a very unusual double horseshoe arch.

Waterfall of Horcajo
Nature
The Chorrera de Horcajo is a twelve-metre waterfall located in the municipal area of Horcajo de los Montes, on the southern face of the Montes de Toledo, within the area of influence of the Cabañeros national park. It has been declared a Protected Landscape by the Junta de Comunidades de Castilla-La Mancha since 6 May 2003. The waterfall lies in an area of Mediterranean woodland dominated by rockrose and holm oaks, while the wetland created by the surrounding rocky area allows for the presence of holly, birch and fern. It is reached by a paved track from the municipality to a picnic area and car park, from which a path sets off following the course of the river, with a total round-trip route of 6.5 kilometres; a wooden platform allows the surroundings to be observed without disturbing them.
Ethnographic Museum of Horcajo de los Montes
Monument
The Ethnographic Museum of Horcajo de los Montes (Ciudad Real) displays the traditional building techniques of the district, with adobe and stone walls and roofs of rockrose and strawberry-tree branches, together with tools and utensils made of leather, cork, wood, rushes, wax and bone. Among its pieces, a 19th-century wine press built of oak wood from the lands of Cabañeros stands out, and the museum uses photographs and models to explain the process of making the traditional pitarra wine.
Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe de Horcajo
