What to see and do in Socovos

Socovos
Village
Municipality of the comarca of Sierra del Segura, in the province of Albacete, which the pact of Alcaraz of 1243 took from the taifa of Murcia to Castilian rule and which ended up as the head of one of the three commanderies the Order of Santiago held in the present province; it was officially called Socobos until 1860 and preserves the castle of la Encomienda, of the twelfth century and remodelled in the sixteenth. In its district are the schematic rock art shelter of the Solana del Molinico, included in the World Heritage listing since 1998, and the Noguera del Arco, a walnut tree declared a remarkable tree in 2003.
Castle of la Encomienda de Socovos
Monument
The Castillo de la Encomienda de Socovos, of Muslim origin and built in the 12th century, passed to the Order of Santiago in the mid-13th century after its reconquest in the time of Fernando III, and was remodelled in the 16th century under Felipe II. The fortress, of polygonal plan, retains an outer enclosure reinforced by quadrangular towers shaped like cubes, among which an Almohad polygonal tower stands out, unique in the whole province of Albacete. Despite its declaration as a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), it remained abandoned until the town council, with the support of the Junta de Comunidades de Castilla-La Mancha, acquired it in 2006 and drew up a master plan; restoration work began in November 2007.

Nature
A walnut tree with an estimated age of some 1,800 years, designated a singular tree in 2003 and considered one of the longest-lived specimens of its species in Europe. It is the only protected singular tree in the province.
