What to see and do in Yaiza

Yaiza
Village
Municipality in southwestern Lanzarote whose main tourist center, Playa Blanca, today concentrates most of its population, well above that of the municipal capital, Yaiza, itself, or of villages such as Femés and Uga.
El Rubicón, primer asentamiento europeo de Canarias
Historical milestone
In the south of what is now the municipality of Yaiza, the encampment of El Rubicón was established in 1402, the first European settlement in the Canary archipelago and the starting point of the Norman conquest of Lanzarote led by Jean de Bethencourt.
Erupciones de Timanfaya (1730-1736)
Historical milestone
Between 1 September 1730 and 1736, a series of eruptions buried nine villages and around a quarter of the island under lava and ash. The parish priest of Yaiza, Andrés Lorenzo Curbelo, left a first-hand account of the six years of eruptions that remains today the main historical source for the event; in 1824 a new eruptive episode occurred in the same area.
Parque Nacional de Timanfaya
Nature
Declared a national park on 9 August 1974, it covers 51.07 km² between Yaiza and Tinajo across more than 25 volcanic formations, among them the Montañas del Fuego (Fire Mountains). The subsoil still retains residual heat from the 18th-century eruptions, with temperatures of 100-120°C just a few metres down; it is the second most visited national park in the Canary Islands.
Salinas de Janubio
Nature
The most extensive salt flats on Lanzarote, built between 1895 and 1945 over a naturally occurring volcanic lagoon, with a protected area of 168 hectares since 1994. The Padrón family still keeps up traditional salt production there today, though on a much smaller scale than in the past.
El Golfo y el Charco de los Clicos
Nature
A semicircular, green-toned lagoon inside a large crater open to the sea, formed by the natural welling-up of seawater; its colour comes from microscopic algae. It lies next to the village of El Golfo, on the coast of the Parque Natural de los Volcanes, a landscape produced by the 1824 eruptions.
Los Ajaches y las playas de Papagayo
Nature
A volcanic massif around eleven million years old, the oldest on Lanzarote, declared a Monumento Natural (Natural Monument) in 1994 after being a natural area of national interest since 1987. At its southwestern tip, already recorded on Torriani's 16th-century maps, lie the Papagayo beaches, on the coast of the old Rubícón.
Reserva de la Biosfera de Lanzarote
Historical milestone
UNESCO declared Lanzarote a Biosphere Reserve on 7 October 1993, the first whole island in the world to receive this designation together with Menorca, under a new strategy of the MaB programme to protect environmentally valuable territories under heavy human pressure. This designation is distinct from the World Heritage List and does not mean the island is inscribed on it.
