What to see and do in Telde

Telde
Village
Second most populous municipality in Gran Canaria, with an extensive historic quarter in the neighborhoods of San Juan and San Francisco. It was one of the island's two great aboriginal kingdoms before the Castilian conquest and today preserves archaeological sites, colonial churches and a stretch of coast with fishing villages.
Basílica de San Juan Bautista y Santísimo Cristo de Telde
Monument
Church begun in 1484 by Cristóbal García del Castillo over an earlier church, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's top heritage-protection category) in 1991 and raised to minor basilica by Paul VI in 1973. It holds the Cristo de Telde, an image 1.80 meters tall and only 6.5 kilos, made between 1550 and 1555 by Tarascan craftsmen from Michoacán (Mexico) using corn-stalk paste, and a Gothic-Flemish triptych brought from Flanders around 1525 by the same García del Castillo.
Cuatro Puertas
Historical milestone
Aboriginal site excavated on the Montaña Bermeja, with a large almogarén (ceremonial space) with four artificial entrances through which, at the solstices, sunlight falls on cup marks carved into the ground. It is often compared to Risco Caído for its astronomical function, but it is not part of the 2019 UNESCO World Heritage declaration, which is limited to Artenara, Tejeda, Gáldar and Agaete.
Poblado de Tufia
Nature
Old fishing hamlet on a coastal promontory in Telde, next to the remains of a well-preserved aboriginal settlement. Its rocky coastline and natural tide pools form one of the least altered stretches of Gran Canaria's metropolitan coastline.
Barranco de los Cernícalos
Nature
Gorge that rises in the Caldera de los Marteles, at 1,500 meters of altitude, and descends to Tecén. It preserves one of the island's finest gallery forests of Canary willow (Salix canariensis). It forms part of the Los Marteles Special Nature Reserve, declared on 16 November 1994, which also extends across Valsequillo, Ingenio, Agüimes and the two Tirajana municipalities.
Gregorio Chil y Naranjo
Curiosity
Physician, historian and anthropologist born in Telde in 1831 and died in Las Palmas in 1901. Founder of the Museo Canario, he devoted his fortune and his life to documenting and preserving the aboriginal culture of the islands before it was lost.
Fiestas del Cristo de Telde
Curiosity
Festivities in honor of the Santísimo Cristo de Telde, held between 11 and 22 September, coinciding with one of the most crowded pilgrimages in Gran Canaria. The Cristo has shared the title of perpetual mayor of the city since 1977.
