What to see and do in Mara

Mara
Village
Mara is a municipality in the Comunidad de Calatayud, in Zaragoza, 15 kilometres from that city, at the foot of the sierra de Vicor, in the valley formed by the Perejiles river. On its territory, at the place called Poyo de Mara, are the archaeological remains of Segeda, an oppidum of the Belli whose expansion of its walls gave Rome the pretext for the Celtiberian war; the defeat of Quintus Fulvius Nobilior in 153 BC led to the Roman consular year being moved forward to 1 January. In the mid-19th century the place had 281 inhabitants according to Pascual Madoz; today it has 161 (INE 2025). Its parish church of San Andrés Apóstol, in late Mudéjar style with a baroque spire, holds a relic of the saint. The main festivities are held on 20 January, in honour of Saints Fabián and Sebastián.
