What to see and do in Urriés

Urriés
Village
Urriés is a small municipality in the north of the Cinco Villas, in the province of Zaragoza, in the pre-Pyrenean comarca of the Valdonsella. It was founded in the year 921 by Pedro Jordán de Urriés, who took part in the reconquest of the Valdonsella under the orders of Sancho Garcés I of Pamplona; from that period dates the church of San Esteban, from the 12th century, with additions from the 16th century such as the sacristy. In 1962, on removing the altarpiece from the apse, hidden mural paintings from around 1310-1330 appeared, attributed to the so-called Master of Urriés, with scenes from Genesis and from the childhood and Passion of Christ; detached using the strappo technique and restored in Barcelona, they are preserved in the Diocesan Museum of Jaca, and some fragments have even been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum in New York.

Monument
Church of San Esteban, from the 12th century with additions from the second half of the 16th century, such as the sacristy. In 1962, Gothic murals from around 1310-1330 were discovered behind the altarpiece, with scenes from the Old and New Testaments including Adam and Eve in Paradise; transferred to canvas, they are now kept in the Diocesan Museum of Jaca. The church was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 2003.
