What to see and do in Navardún

Navardún
Village
Navardún, a small municipality in the north of the Zaragoza Cinco Villas, with 35 inhabitants, sits in the valley of the river Onsella, a tributary of the Aragón which rises in the sierra de Santo Domingo. It is one of the villages of the Valdonsella, a comarca that depended on Aragon and, ecclesiastically, on the bishop of Pamplona until, in the 18th century, the archpriesthood passed to the bishopric of Jaca; the place already existed at the start of the 11th century, and its name has been documented since 880, when a donation to the monastery of San Salvador de Leyre mentions 'Nauardunum', with the suffix -dunum of probable Celtic origin ('stronghold'). Of the medieval castle, a piece of the Valdonsella's defensive network, only the keep remains; the church of the Assumption is Romanesque and in the territory stands the wayside cross of Morea.
