Mosqueruela
Village
Mosqueruela is a mountain municipality in Gúdar-Javalambre, in Teruel, at an altitude of 1,471 m, one of the highest in Aragon, on the eastern slope of the sierra de Gúdar, near the boundary with Castellón. Its name comes from mosquera, 'resting place for transhumant livestock', a wooded area with a spring along the route of the royal drove roads, a condition its surroundings meet. According to the historian Jerónimo Zurita, it was reconquered from the Muslims by Alfonso II the Chaste in 1181, and served James I as an initial stronghold for the conquest of the Kingdom of Valencia; it received from Peter IV the title of villa in 1366, to the point that the comarca came to be called Comunidad de Teruel y Villa de Mosqueruela. It preserves a livestock fair in September, with bullfighting festivities. It has 563 inhabitants.
