What to see and do in Yunquera

Yunquera
Village
Its name alludes to the rushes (juncos) that grew here; it was a passage for the Roman legions between Málaga and the Serranía de Ronda. Lying entirely within the Sierra de las Nieves Biosphere Reserve, it preserves 1,050 hectares of pinsapo fir forest. It now has around 2,800 inhabitants.
Pinsapar de Yunquera
Nature
The municipality preserves about 1,050 hectares of Spanish fir (Abies pinsapo), an endemic fir of the Serranía de Ronda and the Sierra de Grazalema, one of the best-preserved forests of this species.
Tajo de la Caina
Nature
Highly spectacular limestone escarpment in the territory of Yunquera, alongside other formations such as the Peñón de Ronda, the Peñón de los Enamorados, the Zarzalones valley, and the Sierra Cabrilla.
Yunquera, paso militar romano
Historical milestone
The place name comes from the former abundance of rushes, evidence of the site's water resources. Although no visible remains survive, the area served as an essential military route between Malaca and the Ronda region during the Roman conquest of Hispania, and was inhabited by Visigothic Christians before the arrival of the Berbers.
Pinsapo Trail
Activity
Mountain race running almost entirely through the Spanish fir forest of Yunquera, held since 2011 and considered one of the most important and beautiful in Andalusia.
