What to see and do in Monda

Monda
Village
Some historians place the Battle of Munda (45 BC), in which Julius Caesar defeated the sons of Pompey, within this municipality's territory, though the identification remains debated among specialists. After the Christian conquest of Málaga, its Mudéjars lived alongside the Christian population until the 16th-century Morisco rebellion. It now has around 3,000 inhabitants.
Castillo de Monda
Monument
Fortress of Umayyad origin (9th-10th centuries) linked to the revolt of Umar ibn Hafsun; after being abandoned it was reoccupied by the Almohads in the 12th century, who built the main enclosure with an outer bailey, keep, towers, and cistern, and a polygonal tower decorated with "cords of eternity". The Nasrids reinforced it and added a wall of more than 300 meters that protected nearly a hundred dwellings. After the Christian conquest it was dismantled to prevent uprisings; between 1989 and 1991, following emergency archaeological excavations, it was converted into a hotel.
