Motril
Village
Conquered by the Catholic Monarchs in December 1489, when it had more than 2,000 inhabitants, five mosques, and an economy based on farming, fishing, and silk. Philip IV granted it the title of city in 1657. In 2025 it has 59,862 inhabitants.
La industria azucarera de Motril
Historical milestone
The Azucarera Nuestra Señora de la Cabeza sugar refinery, from 1850, was among the first in Spain to use a steam engine; sugarcane production declined after 1902 due to competition from sugar beet. From 22 to 25 July 1873 Motril even proclaimed itself an independent canton during the First Republic.
