The Azucarera Nuestra Señora de la Cabeza sugar refinery, from 1850, was among the first in Spain to use a steam engine; sugarcane production declined after 1902 due to competition from sugar beet. From 22 to 25 July 1873 Motril even proclaimed itself an independent canton during the First Republic.
