What to see and do in Zagra

Zagra
Village
The name comes from the Arabic 'al-Sajra' ('the rock'). Dependent on Loja, it became independent in 1982; a court ruling temporarily overturned the split in 1986, until the definitive decree was published on 2 May 1987. In 2025 it has 845 inhabitants.
La segregación de Zagra
Historical milestone
Zagra was a hamlet of Loja until it became an independent municipality by royal decree on 13 September 1982, under the presidency of Leopoldo Calvo-Sotelo; the split was annulled by the Supreme Court in 1986, and it was finally completed, with a reduced territory, on 2 May 1987.
El origen del topónimo Zagra
Curiosity
The name Zagra is thought to come from the Arabic 'al-Sajra' ('the rock') or from 'at-Tagr' ('the frontier'), referring to its historic position next to the border between the kingdom of Granada and Castile.
