Zagra was a hamlet of Loja until it became an independent municipality by royal decree on 13 September 1982, under the presidency of Leopoldo Calvo-Sotelo; the split was annulled by the Supreme Court in 1986, and it was finally completed, with a reduced territory, on 2 May 1987.
