What to see and do in Alcalá del Valle

Alcalá del Valle
Village
Alcalá del Valle is a municipality in the Sierra de Cádiz, in the north-eastern tip of the province, south of Setenil de las Bodegas and set within the Serranía de Ronda, with which it maintained strong ties: it belonged to Málaga until the administrative division of 1833 and to its diocese until 1980. Today it closes the Route of the Pueblos Blancos. It sits in a natural depression, at an average altitude of 628 metres, formed by sedimentation following the Betic folds of the Tertiary. The village arose after the Christian conquest of Setenil in 1484, when part of its Muslim population settled in this valley. Philip II sold it to the Archbishop of Seville, Hernando de Valdés, in 1559; it recovered its own jurisdiction in 1763 and fixed its definitive name, Alcalá del Valle, in 1770.
Monastery of Caños Santos
Monument
The convent of Caños Santos is actually located in the municipality of Olvera, although it is owned by the town council of Alcalá del Valle, in a setting of great scenic value. Its origins go back to the 16th century, when the Count of Ureña and Morón donated land to build a hermitage dedicated to Nuestra Señora de Caños Santos; as devotion grew, the convent and house were built in 1542, although its fabric shows interventions from the 17th and 18th centuries. Nearby are the cave where, according to popular belief, the Virgin appeared, and the springs that give the site its name. In 1835 the image was permanently moved to Cañete la Real (Málaga), of which it is the patroness. After centuries of ruin, it is now undergoing restoration.
Dólmenes del Tomillo
Monument
The Dólmenes del Tomillo complex, in the municipality of Alcalá del Valle (Cádiz), is made up of three gallery dolmens with a headstone, located north of the Tomillo dehesa. These are Chalcolithic megalithic tombs, predating 2000 BC, from the beginnings of the Metal Age, which contained burials from that period. A menhir, a rock with a pointed end set upright, was also found nearby. The site was excavated in 1983 by the Provincial Museum of Cádiz.
