Legazpi
Village
Municipality of the Alto Urola with 8,384 inhabitants (2025). The first written reference dates from 1290, when Sancho IV mentions "ironworks that are in Legazpia"; the town became independent from Segura probably in 1608. Its traditional nickname, "ilintxak" ("embers" in Basque), recalls its metalworking past, with old wind-powered ironworks (haizeolak) later replaced by water-powered ironworks on the Urola. In 2013 it became the first Fair Trade City in Gipuzkoa.
