What to see and do in Gatika

Gatika
Village
Municipality that had about 890 inhabitants in the mid-19th century; its parish church, founded in the 15th century, was rebuilt in 1708. It has 1,633 inhabitants (INE, 2025).
Castillo de Butrón
Monument
Tower house of the lords of Butrón, documented from the 13th century and converted into a castle during the late medieval Wars of the Bands. After centuries of neglect, the architect Francisco de Cubas rebuilt it from 1878 onward, commissioned by the Marquis of Torrecilla, following the model of Romantic Bavarian castles, giving it its current fairy-tale-castle appearance.
Iglesia de Santa María de Gatika
Monument
Parish church founded in the 15th century and rebuilt in 1708, the mother church of other churches in the Gatika area.
Puente de Arzubi
Monument
Two-arched ashlar bridge spanning the Plencia river as it passes through Gatika.
Molinos harineros históricos de Gatika
Curiosity
In the 19th century Gatika had as many as six flour mills making use of the flow of the Plencia river, a reflection of its former agricultural economy.
