What to see and do in Zuia

Zuia
Village
Municipality of 123 km², the largest in its cuadrilla, to which it gives its name, with its capital at Murguía/Murgia. The Zuia valley is already cited in the Reja de San Millán of 1025, within the merindad of Ossigani; its capital is documented as Zuhivarrutia in 1179 and Çuibarrutia in 1257. In the 15th century it was the scene of the Wars of the Bands: in 1450 the Oñacino Fernando de Zárate el Bravo died defending Murguía, an event commemorated by a stone cross preserved next to the town hall.
Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Oro, Zuia
Monument
Located at about 850 meters of altitude between Bitoriano and Jugo, the first document to mention it dates from 1138, and archaeological remains of occupation dating to around 750 BC have been found in the surrounding area. The original Romanesque church, from the late 11th and 12th centuries, has vaults from the 14th-15th centuries and a sacristy with false plaster vaults from the 18th century; the complex was rebuilt after a fire in 1913.
Museo de la Miel de Murgia, Zuia
Curiosity
Housed in the Oregi Etxea house, in Murgia, capital of the Gorbeialdea region, it shows how honey is produced in the area around the Gorbeia and the traditional tools used in beekeeping.
Palacios de Murgia, Zuia
Monument
The settlement of Murgia, at the foot of Mount San Fausto (751 m), preserves small palaces such as the Vea Murgia palace, the Marquesa palace, and the Casa Iradier, testimony to the institutional and economic importance the villa achieved within the valley.
Macizo del Gorbea en Zuia
Nature
A large part of the Gorbea massif, including Mount Gorbea itself (1,482 m) and Berretín (1,226 m), extends within the municipal term of Zuia, which preserves beech forests in Berretín and Altube and oak groves in the Bayas river valley.
Torre de la Encontrada y torre de Aguirre
Monument
Zuia preserves remains of medieval defensive towers linked to the conflicts between feudal factions of the Basque Country: the Torre de la Encontrada, in Luquiano, and the Torre de Aguirre, in Vitoriano.
Ganadería e Idiazábal en Zuia
Food and drink
Zuia's sheep-farming tradition keeps up the production of cheese under the Idiazábal Denomination of Origin, alongside cattle farming and growing beekeeping activity in the municipality.
