The Puerta Sur, flanked by two large towers, is the best-preserved entrance of the old wall that surrounds the entire historic center of Peñacerrada, of medieval layout. The complex was registered in 1996 as a Bien Cultural Calificado, the Basque regional heritage figure, with the category of Conjunto Monumental, in the General Inventory of Basque Cultural Heritage.
