What to see and do in Paderne de Allariz

Paderne de Allariz
Village
Paderne de Allariz is a concello in the province of Ourense, in the comarca of Allariz-Maceda, situated on the eastern edge of the Ourense depression and watered by the Barbaña and Gaiola rivers, with a mountain range that runs through it from north to south and rises above 700 metres. It was called simply Paderne until 1916, when it took its current name to distinguish it from another Galician concello with the same name. It has about 1,350 inhabitants spread across ten parishes. Its baroque church of San Lourenzo displays a tower inspired by the cathedral of Santiago; also preserved are the church of San Salvador de Mourisco, with a 17th-century main altarpiece, the group of hórreos at Vilameá and a peto de ánimas at Saá dated 1800. It celebrates the feast of San Lourenzo on 10 August.
Church of San Salvador de Solbeira
Monument
A Baroque church finished in 1789, singular for the geometric decoration of its doorway and for the design of its roof; it serves the parish of Solbeira, on the eastern rim of the Ourense depression, at about 536 metres above sea level.
Church of San Salvador de Mourisco
Monument
The church of San Salvador de Mourisco gives its name to the place of Saa, in the parish of the same name in the concello of Paderne de Allariz, where, besides the church, a peto de ánimas (wayside shrine) is also preserved. It is a Baroque church with a single nave, a timber roof and granite columns, housing a 17th-century altarpiece; it gives its name to one of the ten parishes of this concello, whose administrative capital is the settlement of Rioseco.
Souls' wayside shrine of Saá
Monument
A niche dated 1800, with a platform of two courses and a scallop motif, put up at the place called Saá; these petos collected alms for the souls in purgatory and still punctuate the roads of the Ourense interior.
Barbaña River through Paderne
Nature
One of the two watercourses that cross the municipality, along with the Gaiola, between north-south ridges rising above 700 metres; downstream it follows the valley until it flows into the Miño inside the city of Ourense.
Rioseco Fair
Activity
A market held on the 13th of every month at Rioseco, the municipal capital, which brings together people from the district's ten parishes; it is the main commercial event of a municipality of barely 38 square kilometres.
Church of San Salvador de Solveira
Monument
A parish church of Romanesque origin that kept growing until the Baroque, so that in one and the same building the medieval apse coexists with the chapels and altarpieces added during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
Arnoia River Natural Area
Nature
A protected area that follows almost the whole course of the Arnoia, from Calvelo to its mouth on the Miño, and includes stretches of the tributaries Tioira, Meván and Gato together with the riverside woods that accompany them.
Honey of Galicia
Food and drink
A honey covered by a protected geographical indication which in the hills of the Arnoia is gathered above all from heather and chestnut, two flowerings that give a dark product, of intense and slightly bitter flavour.
The Arnoia as it passes through Paderne de Allariz
Nature
The river is hemmed in on a stretch of chestnut groves, alder woods and old mills included in the Área de Allariz biosphere reserve, declared by Unesco in 2005. It is one of the best preserved river corridors of Ourense.
