What to see and do in Corcubión

Corcubión
Village
Corcubión is a town and municipality in the province of A Coruña, set on a small peninsula that juts into the Atlantic between the cove of Estorde and the ria that bears its name, with the town built up on the slope sheltered from the winds. It was an obligatory stop for pilgrims who, after Santiago, continued on to Finisterre, and in 1747, during the War of Jenkins' Ear, the ship Glorioso put in here with a cargo of silver after single-handedly defeating two English squadrons. A concello of just 6.6 square kilometres and around 1,660 inhabitants, its old town was declared a historic-artistic ensemble in 1985; overlooking the ria stands the Cardinal's Castle, raised around 1750 facing the castelo do Príncipe, next to the church of San Marcos.
Church of San Marcos de Corcubión
Monument
A church raised between the 14th and 15th centuries in seafaring Gothic on the remains of an earlier Romanesque building; its interior is presided over by the carving of San Marcos da Cadeira, the work of a Venetian school of the second half of the 15th century.
Corcubión historic ensemble
Monument
An old town declared a historic-artistic complex in 1985, with arcades, glazed galleries and 18th-century manor houses that reflect the prosperity of the town when it was a working port and the administrative head of the comarca.
Castle of o Cardeal
Monument
A coastal battery begun in 1741 at the Punta de Pión and completed by the engineers Francisco Llovet and Carlos Lemaur; armed with twelve cannon and a garrison of 96 men, it defended the mouth of the ría together with the Castelo do Príncipe.
Beach of Quenxe
Nature
The Quenxe beach, in the parish of Redonda, is one of the sandy beaches of the Costa da Morte and stretches, sheltered, for more than 500 metres into the interior of the Corcubión estuary, right next to the town's historic quarter, declared a historic-artistic site. It holds the Blue Flag, and its sheltered orientation and calm waters make it the quintessential urban beach of the concello.
Corcubión Medieval Fair
Activity
A historical market held on the third weekend in July: local people dress in period clothes and deck out the streets and squares of the historic centre, which for a few days turns into a medieval market on the edge of the ría.
The chain of the ría
Curiosity
Oral tradition tells that a chain joined the castle of El Cardenal with that of El Príncipe, on the Cee shore, and that when drawn tight it prevented enemy ships from passing towards the head of the estuary.
Church of San Pedro de Redonda
Monument
A 12th-century Romanesque parish church which preserves late paintings, of the 17th century, on the vault and on the apse wall, a type of mural decoration rare in the rural churches of the coast.
Town hall of Corcubión
Monument
Paid for in 1924 by the emigrant José Carrera as a poorhouse and school of arts and crafts, it has a central body with Corinthian pilasters and two symmetrical wings that housed the classrooms for boys and girls.
Seafood of the Corcubión estuary
Food and drink
The beds of the estuary yield clams, cockles and razor clams worked on foot and from boats, shellfish that in the villa are prepared marinera style, with rice or simply steamed with a little lemon.
Chapel of Santo Antón
Monument
A Baroque church built in 1684 by Domingo Durán and rebuilt on several occasions, rectangular in plan with a capela maior that occupies the whole nave and a wooden gabled roof covered in tile. It preserves from the original altarpiece a polychrome image of Santo Antón from the late 17th century, and forms a group with a cruceiro erected in the 18th century.
Chapel of o Pilar
Monument
Raised in 1931 by Pilar Hermida Orbea in an eclectic style very much of her time, it was attached to the almshouse she herself had paid for in 1925; the concello later rehabilitated it for use as the municipal auditorium.
