What to see and do in Herrera de Alcántara

Herrera de Alcántara
Village
Town located right within the Tajo Internacional Biosphere Reserve, halfway between Cedillo and Santiago de Alcántara, on a hill surrounded by the Aurela stream and the Tajo, Sever and Alburrel rivers. Its name comes from an ironworks that operated between the 11th and 13th centuries, from which, according to local tradition, the grilles of the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela were forged.
Complejos dolménicos de Herrera de Alcántara
Historical milestone
The territory of Herrera de Alcántara preserves several megalithic slate complexes — Cerro Caldera, Bodegas, El Sesmo, Vereda, and Solana — along with anthropomorphic tombs at El Cotillo and Corral de la Becerra, thousand-year-old and very fragile remains of which only partial traces survive.
Iglesia parroquial de San Sebastián de Herrera de Alcántara
Monument
18th-century church, the town's main religious building, which belonged as a commandery to the Military Order of Alcántara following the Christian reconquest of the late 12th and early 13th centuries.
Dolmen de Bodegas y poblado de Cerro do Castelo
Monument
Archaeological complex including the Bodegas dolmen (a Chalcolithic tholos), the Cerro de la Caldera dolmen, the Sesmo dolmen and the fortified settlement of Cerro do Castelo, on the right bank of the Sever river, with remains of a circular wall and round dwellings.
Cueva de Toca Mora y Puente Viejo del Cabrioso
Nature
The "Toca Mora" cave opens onto the cliffs of the Tajo and owes its name to local legends about Moorish occupation. Nearby stands the Puente Viejo del Cabrioso, a slate-slab bridge of uncertain but ancient origin.
