What to see and do in La Parra

La Parra
Village
Municipality of 1,381 inhabitants at 525 m altitude, 59 km from the provincial capital. Together with Zafra and Feria, it formed the original core of the Suárez de Figueroa lordship; some authors place its origin in a Templar fortress that guarded the natural passage between Mérida and Jerez de los Caballeros.
Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción
Monument
Gothic church with an ornate ribbed vault; it was the seat of an archpriesthood in 1519.
Convento de Santa Clara
Monument
17th-century Baroque convent with an alabaster sculpture of San Juan Bautista; it now operates as a guesthouse.
El posible origen romano de La Parra
Historical milestone
A 1706 Roman funerary inscription mentioning "Helvia Cemodesia" suggests the place may have been the ancient Vitis Calpurniana, a Roman winemaking estate; the name La Parra itself may derive from this.
Vecinos de La Parra en la conquista de Venezuela
Curiosity
Around 21 townspeople from La Parra took part in expeditions to the Americas, among them Jerónimo de la Parra and his son Juan Ruiz de la Parra, documented in Venezuela.
