What to see and do in Millares

Millares
Village
Millares is one of the smallest municipalities in the Canal de Navarrés, with 321 inhabitants. It lies in the Cretaceous massif of the Caroche, in the cleft opened by the río Júcar between the Muela de Cortes and the sierra de Caballón, on the boundary with Dos Aguas and Tous. In its caves and rock shelters, such as that of the Barranco de las Cañas, naturalistic rock paintings are preserved, among the more than twenty-five rock shelters with rock art discovered by José Martínez Royo and declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO; the same researcher found a site with dinosaur footprints. Settled since the Bronze Age, it was named Menlaria by the Greeks and Mellarium by the Romans, in reference to honey. It had a Morisco majority until its expulsion in 1609.

Palaeontological site in Millares with fossilised dinosaur footprints, discovered by José Martínez Royo and one of the distinctive heritage features of the comarca of La Canal de Navarrés. It is in fact two separate ichnological sites, catalogued as Tambuc East and Tambuc West, both listed among the municipality's monuments and places of interest.

Activity
Millares, in the comarca of la Canal de Navarrés (Valencia), celebrates its patronal festivities from 4 to 8 August in honour of the Santísimo Cristo de la Salud. It also dedicates a three-day celebration to San Blas, from 3 to 5 February, in honour of this patron saint of the municipality, before the main summer festival arrives.

It is an important archaeological site, with evidence of human occupation from the Iberian period and remains from the early Metal Age, in the transition from the end of the Neolithic.
